DeVry University plans 600 jobs for W. Loop office

Downers Grove-based for-profit education provider DeVry Inc. plans to bring 600 jobs over nine years to new offices in the West Loop. DeVry Online Services new South River Plaza offices will house senior executives, admissions and other administrative staff that will primarily provide online services to its flagship institution, DeVry University.

DeVry 4th-qtr profit estimates disappoint

For-profit education provider DeVry Inc warned that profit for the June quarter will fall far short of market expectations as it spends more to boost falling enrollment at its many colleges, sending its shares plunging 23%.

"The bigger piece was the higher cost structure relative to the enrollment levels and if you roll that forward into fiscal 2013, that is going to have a disproportionate hit to earnings," Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom said.

DeVry profit beats as healthcare enrollments rise

For-profit education company DeVry Incposted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on lower costs and strong enrollments at its healthcare colleges.Student sign-ups at DeVry's medical and healthcare collegesrose 31 % on average. Sign-ups at DeVry University, whichaccounts for the bulk of the company's revenue, fell about 8 % for the September session.

The company, which owns DeVry University, Chamberlain College of Nursing and Carrington College, is on track for cost savings of $60 million in fiscal 2013.

Shares of DeVry, which had risen about 40 percent in the six months to Wednesday's close, were up a further 13 percent in extended trading at $29.40 on the New York Stock Exchange.

DeVry, Chamberlain campuses reopened after threat

The campuses of DeVry University and the Chamberlain College of Nursing will be open Tuesday, a day after they were closed because of an email that threatened "explosions,".

DeVry and Chamberlain's campuses were inspected with explosive-detecting dogs and nothing was found Monday, Ernie Gibble, a spokesman for DeVry Education Group.

         DeVry Inc. shares fell more than 20 percent Wednesday after the for-profit education company reported fiscal third quarter results that included a 21 percent drop in undergraduate enrollment.

        The company, in the spotlight with other for-profit colleges over graduate job placement rates, said revenue in the three months ended March 31 fell 5.9 percent, to $509 million. Net income fell 15 percent to $57 million and earnings per share lost 12 percent to 88 cents.
Operating cash flow was $282 million, down from $355 million a year earlier.

DeVry freezes tuition prices amid declining enrollments

      DeVry University said Monday it is freezing tuition rates for the school year starting in July, citing continuing economic weakness.
        The Downers Grove-based for-profit university said,"Given the continued economic challenges facing our country, we believe taking this step toward curbing the national trend of rising tuition costs is a prudent decision," in a statement.

DeVry unit plans shift to Naperville

       The Naperville Plan Commission last week backed giving DeVry a conditional-use permit to operate the school in an 11,000-square-foot space at Westings Corporate Center, 2056 Westings Ave.

       University officials said they are making the move because of the need for more space. They plan to offer undergraduate programs in addition to graduate courses at the new site, which is expected to open.

 A few top-flight business schools have entered the online world, bringing cachet to the field. But skeptics abound. Access to the best professors and the bonds formed with B-school peers are key elements missing online, they argue.

The networking that goes on at elite schools is a bankable piece of the experience, said Toby Woll, one of two principal investigators for a study published last fall on blended learning programs for UNICON, a consortium of business school executive education leaders.MBA programs, in particular, pose a logistical challenge to the online experience, Woll said.
